HOPES is looking for volunteers interested in helping their neighbors prepare their income taxes. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), an IRS supported program, volunteers are trained how to prepare simple federal and state tax returns.

VITA trainings begin in December and opportunities to become a volunteer are available throughout tax season (January through April). Each volunteer is asked to provide at least 5 hours of tax assistance per week and flexible hours for completion are offered at various locations throughout Hudson and Union Counties.

Volunteering in the Classroom

Volunteers interested in teaching Adult Basic Education and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults; must have previous experience teaching. Fluency in Spanish or Chinese languages is helpful but not required. Although a Teacher certification is preferred, it is not required and training is provided. Volunteer opportunities may be available during the day or early evenings throughout the year.
