Who We Are
HOPES Community Action Partnership (CAP), Inc.'s mission is to provide community services that respond to the social, educational and training needs of individuals in an effort to overcome barriers and fight the causes of poverty.
OUR STORY
HOPES CAP, Incorporated is a member of the Community Action Partnership National Association established in 1964 under President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration signing the Economic Opportunity Act. As a CAP organization, HOPES helps people to help themselves in achieving self-sufficiency. Community Action Agencies are connected by a national network that includes the Community Action Partnership National Association, regional associations, state associations, a national lobbying organization, and a national association of Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) administrators.
From the beginning, HOPES formally Hoboken Organization against Poverty and Economic Stress (H.O.P.E.S), was charged with the responsibility of combating poverty in Hudson County, New Jersey by providing a variety of social services for the community. In 1966, HOPES implemented one of the first established Head Start programs in the country. Since then, HOPES’ Early Childhood Programs - Early Head Start, Head Start, and State-Funded Preschool – has expanded to the cities of Plainfield and Franklin Township, while providing the same high quality educational programs for children and support services for families.
HOPES, like many other businesses, sustained damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and had to leave its previous site for Community Programs at 124 Grand Street. Today HOPES is flourishing with the construction of the new annex at 301 Garden Street, Hoboken. This is a monumental milestone in the Hoboken community's recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy by providing a state-of-the-art educational facility for Hoboken's early childhood population. As a result of our commitment to serving low-income individuals and families, HOPES has had successful results and earned the respect and trust of its clients, partners, and peers. HOPES strives to empower the people it serves, strengthen our communities for the better, and inspire innovation for years to come.
