NJ Shares / Help with energy bills
Welcome to New Jersey SHARES
NJ SHARES can help pay energy bills...
An emergency can quickly turn a life updside down. A financial reversal, an unexpected medical problem, an accident or any other kind of emergency could happen to anyone at any time. Sudden misfortune repects no wealth or position or status.
HOPES, Inc. is an official application site for NJ SHARES
Who does New Jersey SHARES help?
The New Jersey Statewide Heating Assistance and Referral for Energy Services (NJ SHARES) offers financial assistance to Hudson County customers who find themselves unable to pay their home-heating bills because of emergency conditions.
Grants from NJ SHARES are awarded to pay for energy costs. The grant money does not have to be repaid, and there are no age limits or income guidelines to be met.
To qualify for a NJ SHARES grant, customers:
Must have an account with Public Service Electric & Gas Company. (PSE&G)
Must exhaust all community and governmental resources available for financial assistance.
Must provide supporting documentation of their emergency or crisis circumstances (medical bills, unemployment notification, etc.)
HOPES can help clients arrange an equal payment plan with PSE&G for arrears
not covered by the NJ SHARES program.
Individual grants are in amounts sufficient to prevent loss of heating or to restore and
maintain service
What are the limits on grants to each individual?
HOPES, Inc., as a contracted NJ SHARES assistance agency,
completes the intake proccess, determines eligibility and transmits
the information to the central NJ SHARES office online. Upon approval,
an individual or household can receive a one-time grant for natural gas
(up to $700) and electricity (up to $300) for a maximum of $1000
(or a $700 maximum grant for an all-electric home), applied directly to
the utility bill.
Who administers NJ SHARES grants?
Local human services agencies in the community, not the energy companies
that organized NJ SHARES, decide who's eligible to receive financial assistance.
