Adult Classes

This track is recommended for individuals who express an interest in improving their academic skills and work place English as well as for those who would like to become proficient using a computer and Microsoft applications.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

All ABE Classes provide instruction in basic academic skills and GED (General Education Development) preparation.

Basic skill deficiencies in reading, grammar and mathematics are assessed using Testing in Adult Basic Education (TABE) exams. Instruction is tailored based upon individual needs. Concepts are introduced as well as reinforced using adult education instructional software. Pre and post tests will be administered in order to ensure and reinforce the material before proceeding to the next level.

Reading and Writing

The focus of this course is to develop Career English quickly and effectively. Individuals will improve communication skills (both written and verbal) as they learn about sentence structure, noun and pronoun usage, verb tense and appropriate punctuation. Topics and skills are integrated into one’s life in the home, the workplace, and the community. Pre and post tests will be administered to assess participant progress.

Math

The goal of the math skills course is for individuals to be able to use math with confidence. Most of the materials in math classes are individualized. Pre-tests are administered to assess skill level so that lessons can be tailored to each person’s academic needs. Emphasis is placed on applying math skills to home, school, and work. Instruction in the fundamentals of mathematics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is provided. Following this course a post test is administered to evaluate the level of progress made.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The focus of this program is to improve English conversational skills for home and workplace literacy as well as to build a foundation of fundamental vocabulary and essential language structure. Using Rosetta Stone software, instruction is tailored to the individual needs of each person. In addition to an initial assessment, post tests will be administered in order to ensure and reinforce the material before proceeding to the next lesson.

Computer Literacy

All computer classes are taught by Certified Microsoft Specialists. Instruction ranges from basic to intermediate techniques based upon each person’s level of proficiency. Beginner and intermediate users practice with applications commonly utilized in the work field.

  • Working with Windows
  • Power Point / learn to create multi-media graphics presentations...
  • Publisher / create direct mail, marketing & publications content...
  • MS Word / develop office & word processing skills...
  • MS Excel / make spreadsheets, charts, and graphics...
  • Internet / the world of the "web" at your fingertips...surf for fun, learning or profit...

Financial Education

Individuals can enhance their financial knowledge & skills by participating in one on one counseling sessions, workshops, and presentations. Using financial education modules, trained staff will teach about the essentials of finance, establishing credit, and developing an action plan to reach specific goals.
