The Even Start Family Literacy Program has begun its 4th year of servicing single parent families who reside in Hoboken. The purpose of Even Start is to promote family literacy by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy, and parenting education into everyday way of life for parent and child. Our goal for year four is to serve a minimum of 20 families with children 0-8.
Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Single parent household
- Children between the ages of 0-8
- Income eligible
- Parents must be Hoboken residents
- High motivation to improve parenting skills, family literacy, and occupational attainment
Each family will be committed to the program's 5 main components, which include early childhood education, adult education and career training, parent education, parent and child interactive literacy activity ( PACILA ), and home-based education:
- Developmentally-appropriate early childhood education for participating children age birth to 8, serving a three-year age span;
- Adult literacy that leads to the improvement of basic literacy skills, acquisition of English language proficiency, attainment of a GED or High School diploma, and/or development of critical work skills;
- Parenting education to enable parents to support their children's learning,both at home and school, through formal parenting skills training/workshop sessions;
- Home-based education that models positive interaction for parents with their children to help facilitate their learning processes; and
- Parent and child interactive literacy activity (PACILA) to further enhance parenting skills by showing parents the myriad of hands-on activities through which they can promote their child's learning.
